App for Farm Field Trials and Pest Infestation status

Problem Statement :

App for field trials – photo sharing based feedback on monitoring crop health, varietal status, and other parameters at different stages of crop or animal growth.

Findings of Prior Art Search :

There is an existing app by ICRISAT named PlantIX on the similar lines for monitoring crop health and pest infestation.

Initial Research according to the requirements:

This app is intended to provide a platform for farmers and researchers to share their knowledge about pests and solutions to tackle them. Farmers would share images of the crop and pest, they would get a reply notifying them about the solution along with collecting their knowledge about the crops. The solutions to the crop can be suggested by fellow farmers and by researches. A brief description of the process would be:

The data to be collected and shared by farmers to indicate possible abnormalities are categorized as Insect-Pest, Disease or Nutrient Deficiency. The identified pest is to be categorized as major or minor by the farmer. The name of the pest as identified by the farmer is to be entered in the local language and if possible in English, to help researches classify the pests. Symptoms of the disease are to be entered pictorially by the farmer along with the extent of damage from the set of ratings provided. Since the stage of pest is crucial in identifying the problem, the following list is aimed to help understand, Crop Seedling, Transplantation, Maturity, Fruiting and Flowering. Farmers are believed to have a lot of traditional knowledge which hasn’t been well documented and hence is being lost. To provide a solution to this issue, concerned farmers and fellow farmers can share their knowledge of the solution they use, effectiveness of it and the source of the knowledge. Different crops have different requirements for the solution, for instance some crop requires root of a certain plant and need to be sprayed. The different requirements for the crop can be mentioned by the farmer along with the dosage used.

Mind Map

The above mind map is presented to Prof. Anil K Gupta, and along with Dr. Satya there have been some suggestions. Initially, the stages of growth of the plants were to be collected separately but since Prof. Gupta suggested that the stage of the plant, it’s growth , climate, etc play an integral part in identifying the problem and it’s implications, these are going to be incorporated in the design requirements and will be updated soon. Dr. Satya would be giving us the detailed list of all the factors to be incorporated.
